2. What is a protocol
In general, the word 'protocol' means an agreed set of rules of how to do something.
In terms of network communications :-
A network protocol is an agreed way of how to communicate over a network. A protocol is often made formal by setting up a world standard.
Having a protocol standard allows devices to exchange data with one another as long as they are all following the same rules.
Many protocols are developed by the International Standards Organisation (ISO) through its many sub-committees and working groups.
There are many standard network protocols. For example TCP/IP is the network protocol used on the Internet. Any equipment connecting to the Internet will need to support the TCP/IP protocol.
